History of the CVBA/CVSA
The City of Vaughan Baseball Association (CVBA) was founded in 2001 as a result of the merger of two separate organizations, the Maple Minor Baseball Association and the Woodbridge Knights Baseball Club. Both organizations have a colourful history and traditions with baseball in their respective communities that date back over a decade. The CVBA will continue to build on the history and traditions that have already been established by these organizations.
The 2001 Inaugural Season for the CVBA was a resounding success both on and off the field. The enthusiasm for baseball and the new organization was evident right from the start as registrations in the CVBA were very brisk and exceeded all expectations with over 900 players involved in the three levels of play; House League, Select and Representative (“Rep”) programs.
The House League program of the CVBA included players from 4 – 19 years of age divided into two conferences, (“East” & “West”) to accommodate the geographical centres of our community. The highlight of the House League program was the Mid Season Tournaments for all divisions from Tee Ball to Midget. The playoffs in late August declared the East and West Conference Champions and then ultimately crowned the Grand City Champions for the CVBA.
The Select program of the CVBA, involving more dedicated and talented baseball players, fielded five teams to represent the CVBA in Select competition. These Select teams had great success with four teams advancing to the Select Ontario Baseball Association (SOBA) provincial championships and our Junior team coached by Alti Davis won the provincial championship in the 2001 season.
The Rep program of the CVBA, consisting of our most dedicated and talented baseball players, fielded eight teams in our inaugural season to represent the CVBA in Rep competition in the York Simcoe Baseball Association Loop. Three of our teams advanced to the Ontario Baseball Association (OBA) provincial championships. Our Major Mosquito team coached by Dirk Drieberg advanced to place in the top four teams in Ontario. Further success was enjoyed by our Major Pee Wee team coached by Pat Caicco, which placed second in Ontario after a very tight loss in the championship game of the OBA finals.
The CVBA constitution was adopted and ratified at our Annual General Meeting in October 2001 by our membership. The constitution provides the framework of how the CVBA will operate such that the CVBA may continue to be an integral part of the City of Vaughan and provide baseball history and tradition for our community.
